19/09/11

In class today we reviewed what we had learnt so far and linked it back to the model that Graeme has been using. It was useful that Graeme linked things back to the assignment. We looked at transactional analysis and I found the video really interesting and beneficial for my learning. Its interesting to see that there is a. we also looked briefly at the Johari Window model and ‘strokes’ I think Graeme used good real life examples of how this worked but am unsure why the word ‘response’ couldn’t have been used instead. We also had two people present their scenario, I was one of them. Lauren talked about how one of her clients wanted to pay for her coffee. I found this very helpful as I know I would struggle with what to do. It was interesting as to what you could do as it was her last day and you could easily just run with it. In my presentation I felt a little nervous, probably more so because Graeme was there but he was actually really helpful i always appreciate his feedback and he is very encouraging. Graeme actually shared a little bit of himself and one of his fears which is huge! So I really admire him for that. We did the transactional analysis questionnaire and it turns out I’m in the parent stage! Its interesting how we can change the stage to fit the situation and how it can be ‘psychologically comfortable’ but not actually comfortable for the person. Graeme also referred to some films based on books that related to this model and although they were not very happy ending films I am interested to watch at least on of these. Any way, back to my presentation. I thought I probably could have included two more people more because they didn’t really say much but I have the feeling that they don’t tend to say much any way. It was helpful to have the feedback from the group I think we all work very well together. I offered minimal encouragers urging responses. The group works well together and asks appropriate questions. I liked how Hannah wasn’t afraid to ask about something she didn’t understand and was able to wait until I had finished discussing the problem. I think next time I would like to reflect back to people what they have said rather than just agreeing so as to let them know that I have actually taken on board what they have said.

Sooo... today in class we discussed cultural things. I wasn't really as into the session as I should have been, unsure why. A little annoyed that it was that way. Kelsey and Ashley presented, I enjoyed their scenarios. Again a little disappointed I didn't particiapte much, unsure why that was. Kelsey's scenario was pretty intense. I know what I'll be discussing, yay!

05/09/11

Today we looked at stages of group development and the Cogs’ and Tuckman model. We also looked at leadership styles. I was a little annoyed that I had forgotten to do the quiz that told me what kind of leader we were as Graeme referred to this in class. I quite liked the cote Graeme gave “not everything old is necessarily bad, and not everything new is necessarily good”. This is a valid point! I like Graeme’s style of teaching or interaction and his underlying theories. He makes eye contact and is very observant and makes sure everyone gets a say or is able to say something.

It was good to have presentations today. I really enjoyed them and now have a better understanding of how to structure my problem and scenario. I really enjoyed Hannah’s problem, very intense situation but some valuable learning. I think our group functions really well together. Still a little insure about our scoring method and I wasn’t too great with the time taking, felt pretty bad about that. Look forward to more discussions next week!

Today in class we were informed about the outline of the course and the assessment. I enjoyed the session and am happy with my team. However, I did find it hard to concentrate at times due to being tired and the room being very warm. Overall I think I will enjoy this course. I am pleased that our class is more comfortable with each other and that we are not afraid to ask if we are unsure of something.
